X-Men Origens:  Magneto was a planned spin-off movie, set in 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise, based off the Marvel Comics series of the same name.

Plot[]

The plot is currently unknown, but it might have been a prequel movie focusing on Magneto.

  • Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
  • Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike affected the film's production.
  2. David Goyer suggested that the film would only begin production depending on the performance of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
  3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a critical and commercial failure.
  4. Ian McKellen confirmed in an interview saying that he would not reprise his role as Magneto in any X-Men films because of his age.
  5. Fox felt that such a movie would be unnecessary, as the movie X-Men: First Class have already shown a "Magneto origin story" to the audience.

Results[]

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • Much of Magneto's history was used in X-Men: First Class.
  • Ian McKellen returned to reprise his role as Magneto, in The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past & Avengers: Doomsday.
  • Before the the cancellation, David Goyer confirmed that the film confirmed that Magneto film would only begin produced if X-Men Origins: Wolverine was successful but, this did not happen as expected.
