In November 2011, Universal and Illumination planned a Woody Woodpecker feature film. John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky (King of the Hill) were in talks to develop a story.

- Illumination will not do any more live-action movies due to a negative reception from the movie Hop.
- In July 2013, Illumination canceled the project.

- The film was eventually released by Universal Pictures as a live-action/CGI hybrid film in 2018 to critical attack.
- Hop was the first and only live-action film produced by Illumination Entertainment.
