Knuckles the Echidna.

Knuckles the Echidna.

In the early 2000s', there was an alleged attempt to get an animated film centering around the Sonic the Hedgehog character Knuckles the Echidna off of the ground.

Plot[]

The plot is currently unknown. However, it could of had some connection to Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds.

Development[]

While the film was planned as early as the 2000s, the film's existence was first found on Ken Penders' Twitter account in 2020, as DreamWorks Animation had approached him to write a film based off of Knuckles, Penders was on board as a producer, and he was infamously known due to his other scrapped Sonic project Sonic Armageddon and recognizable wonky artstyle. Ken himself was then planning to pitch the Knuckles film to DreamWorks SKG.[1]

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. Ken's proposals were rejected (and backfired). Not because of disinterest, but due to several legal complications regarding the copyrights to any Sonic characters.
  2. Several other executives said there is a license through the intertwining roles of Japanese and American-conceived Sonic characters and concepts entirely limited to media where they first appeared.

Results[]

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • Knuckles the Echidna remains as a SEGA franchise character for Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • On February 15, 2022, it was announced that a Knuckles the Echidna TV show was confirmed to be in the works. It premiered on April 26, 2024 on Paramount+, with Idris Elba returning as Knuckles. The series received mostly negative-to-mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
