In 2016, Ellen DeGeneres announced that she was creating a Dance Moms movie at A Very Good Production, a DeGeneres' TV group-based production company under Warner Bros.[1][2]

The movie comes from an original idea by DeGeneres, who is an avid lover of dance. The idea for the film was inspired by the reality TV show Dance Moms, which followed Abby Lee Miller and the Abby Lee Dance Company and the young dancers beginning their training, as well as their often bickering and competitive mothers. DeGeneres was set to produce, alongside Jeff Kleeman, the then-president of A Very Good Production.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. The official reason why it was cancelled is unknown. However, Dance Moms was originally ending the year that this movie's development was announced and shortly after Abby Lee Miller was sentenced to 366 days in federal prison. However, the series was later renewed for an eighth and final season in the summer of 2018, which ran from June 4th to September 10, 2019.

  • Dance Moms remains as a television series.
  • The film was permanently cancelled.
