Before Joel Schumacher directed Batman Forever, Batman and Batman Returns director Tim Burton expressed his interest in directing the third installment of the Batman franchise that began with Batman in 1989, pitching some plans for his third Batman film.
Plot[]
The plot was never written, but it's been said that the third films was to showcase Batman's origin through flashbacks in the style of The Phantom Mask.

Why It Was Cancelled[]
- Parents thought that Batman Returns was too dark and unsuitable for children.
- McDonald's hated it for being too violent to get any Happy Meal toys.
Results[]
- Because of this backlash, Warner Bros. asked Tim Burton to step down as director in favor of another director, being replaced by Joel Schumacher. He would receive a producer credit in name only.
- Michael Keaton left the role after he didn't like the scripts or Schumacher's vision for Batman III.
- Michael Keaton came back in the movie The Flash.
- DC Comics released its limited comic series, Batman '89, which is based on the script of the film.
- In the years since, fans and DC decided that Batman and Batman Returns are their own continuies from Schumacher's film.
