According to Vincent Waller the plot was originally about space cats and called The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, but it was scrapped due to the plot seeming too dark for audiences.
Why It Was Cancelled
- The plot seemed too dark for audiences.
- Another plot was made instead that wasn't scary
Result
- The filmmakers tossed the script out and decided to rewrite it a new plot for the film. Like Scoob! (2020), it was originally going to be released in theaters in 2020, but it was released to video on demand in 2021 due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
