Disney% 27s The Little Broomstick - Concept Art by Mel Shaw - 1

In 1971, Mary Stewart published The Little Broomstick, the film rights were acquired Walt Disney Productions. In 1980, director Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman decided to make an animated adaptation of the story after the release of The Fox and the Hound.


Plot[]

The plot would be the same as the book.



Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. The studio deemed the project being too similar to the premise of Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
  2. Disney wanted the animation department to produce The Black Cauldron.



Results[]

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • It was eventually adapted into Mary and the Witch's Flower, which was released in 2017 by Japan-based animation studio Studio Ponoc in conjunction with Toho.
