The Last Ronin was a planned live-action/CG animation hybrid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that was in development. Sources told Hollywood Reporter that Paramount has stopped development on the project on November 20, 2025. However, one studio insider claimed the studio wants to leave the door open to possibly revisit it down the road.[1]
Plot[]
Details are under wraps, but since it was described as a "bloody, adult-skewing story,"[1] it would have presumably been a close adaptation of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin", a five-issue comic book miniseries published by IDW Publishing between October 2020 and April 2022 in which the last remaining turtle seeks to avenge the death of his brothers by killing the grandson of the Shredder.
Why It Was Cancelled[]
- Following the Paramount-Skydance merger, the new Paramount leadership did not want the first non-animated TMNT movie 10 years to be bloody and have a R-rating.
- Paramount wants to “Sonic-fy”[1] (i.e. emulate the formula of the Sonic movie franchise for) a planned live action/CG animation hybrid TMNT franchise and hired Neal H. Moritz (who produced the Sonic movies) to spearhead the new direction for a franchise that can play to all ages, including younger audiences.
