LOGO FOR THE MOVIE

A film adaptation based on The Jetsons started development when Paramount Pictures first tried to film a live-action version around 1985, which was to be executive produced by Gary Nardino.

Plot

The plot was currently unknown.

Cast

  • So far, the only known cast member that signed on for the project was Chevy Chase as George Jetson.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. Paramount agreed that the idea for a live action Jetsons movie wouldn't work.
  2. The special effects budget would be too expensive.
  3. The set ideas would be complex to design and manufacture.
  4. The budget for making the props would have to be raised.
  5. A bunch of cast members turned down starring in the film.
  6. A majority of co-stars chose not to star in the film despite it having Chevy Chase in it.
  7. Universal Pictures eventually bought the film rights and after the 1990 film version was released, a live action film was also planned. Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman were considered to play George and Judy Jetson.

Results

  • After plans for a live-action Jetsons were cancelled in the late 1980s, Universal Studios picked up the project as an animated film and theatrically released Jetsons: The Movie in 1990. Unfortunately, the film didn't do well at the box office. However, the film did better on VHS, DVD, LaserDisc and television broadcasts. The film did have a majority of the original cast members from the show. Only two cast members from the show died before it was released theatrically, George O'Hanlon as the original voice of George Jetson and Mel Blanc as the original voice of Mr. Spacely both died in 1989.
  • There are currently plans for a new animated film with director Conrad Vernon at the helm, but it is currently unknown who will star in the film or the release year.
  • In 2025, a new live action Jetsons film was confirmed to be in development, with Jim Carrey in talks to play George.
