Before Rise Of Skywalker hit theaters on December 20th 2019, Colin Trevorrow was originally supposed to direct the original title for Star Wars Epidode IX titled Duel of The Fates; which was scheduled for a May 24, 2019 release date. But due to creative differences with Lucasfilm, he got fired.

Synopis[]

After the events of The Last Jedi, the galaxy is on the brink of collapse as the Resistance fights to restore hope against the tyrannical rule of the First Order. While Rey embarks on a journey to uncover the true power of the Force, Finn and Rose lead a daring mission to ignite a revolution. As destinies collide, the fate of the galaxy will be decided in a battle that will change the fate of the universe.

Plot Summary[]

The First Order’s Reign and the Resistance’s Plan[]

The First Order has solidified its grip over the galaxy, suppressing communication between planets to prevent any organized rebellion. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, growing stronger in the dark side, embarks on a quest for ultimate power, seeking the secrets of the Sith. Meanwhile, General Leia Organa leads the Resistance in a desperate mission to restore hope and liberate the galaxy.

Poe Dameron, Finn, and Rose Tico infiltrate the Kuat Shipyards, aiming to sabotage the First Order’s fleet. They succeed in detonating the facility, but their escape is fraught with peril. The mission underscores the dire state of the Resistance, as their numbers and resources dwindle.

Kylo Ren’s Quest for Power[]

Kylo Ren arrives on Mustafar, searching for an ancient Sith Holocron in Darth Vader’s abandoned castle. When activated, the Holocron projects a message from Emperor Palpatine, originally intended for Vader, instructing him to seek out Tor Valum, a Sith master who can grant immense power. The Holocron, however, is rigged to respond only to Vader, and it unleashes a booby trap that severely injures Kylo, leaving his face scarred.

Undeterred, Kylo travels to Remnicore, where he meets Tor Valum, a 7,000-year-old Sith master. Under Valum’s tutelage, Kylo undergoes brutal training, including an intense trial in a dark-side cave, where he battles and ultimately kills a vision of Darth Vader. His power grows immensely, but his mind is further corrupted.

Rey’s Inner Conflict and the Call to Mortis[]

Rey struggles with her identity and her growing fears about her connection to the dark side. She trains rigorously, haunted by visions of a tormented Kylo Ren. She confides in Luke Skywalker’s Force ghost, who warns her that Kylo is searching for greater power and must be stopped. Rey decides she must go to Mortis, an ancient, mystical world where the balance of the Force is strongest.

Poe and Finn attempt to rally allies across the galaxy, but many fear the First Order’s oppression. Leia sends out a final plea for unity using an old Jedi communication beacon hidden within the ruins of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

The Battle for Coruscant[]

Finn and Rose infiltrate Coruscant, which has fallen into despair under the First Order’s control. They lead a civilian uprising, inspiring thousands to rebel. Finn delivers an impassioned speech, rallying the people to fight back against their oppressors. The Resistance launches a full-scale assault on the First Order’s Capitol.

During the battle, Rose is injured, and BB-8 takes on a critical role in sabotaging the enemy's technology. Finn faces off against former stormtroopers, convincing many of them to defect, turning the tide of battle.

Rey vs. Kylo Ren on Mortis[]

Rey arrives on Mortis and is confronted by Kylo Ren, who is now more powerful than ever. They engage in a fierce duel, both physically and spiritually. Kylo reveals that he was the one who killed Rey’s parents under Snoke’s orders, trying to eliminate any threats to his power. He offers Rey the chance to rule alongside him, claiming they can bring true balance to the Force.

Rey, fueled by anger and betrayal, taps into the dark side, momentarily overpowering Kylo. However, she resists fully succumbing to it. Luke, Leia, and even Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghosts appear, urging Kylo to turn away from the darkness. In a moment of realization, Kylo is filled with regret but refuses to surrender. In the final clash, Rey mortally wounds him.

Before dying, Kylo finally lets go of his Sith identity, reverting to Ben Solo. In his last moments, he warns Rey of an even greater darkness looming. He dies not as a Sith, but as Ben, with Leia’s presence felt as she passes away at the same time.

Victory and New Beginnings[]

With Kylo Ren’s death, the First Order’s grip weakens. Finn and the Resistance secure Coruscant, dealing a final blow to the enemy. Chancellor Hux, realizing defeat is imminent, commits suicide with a lightsaber, unwilling to face humiliation.

Rey, exhausted but victorious, returns to Modesta, where Finn and Rose have created a refuge for Force-sensitive children. Poe and Chewbacca continue leading the Resistance’s efforts to rebuild the galaxy. As Rey watches a new generation of Jedi train, she feels the presence of those who came before her, embracing her role as the one to pass on their knowledge.

The story ends with the Resistance victorious and the Jedi Order reborn, but with the lingering sense that the battle for balance in the Force will always continue.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm, did not like Colin Trevorrow's script. This caused arguments of creative differences and Trevorrow was fired.
  2. People at Lucasfilm thought he would make it bad after his movie Book Of Henry flopped at the box office and got negative reviews.
  3. Three other films were released on May 24, 2019, which were the live-action remake of Aladdin (another Disney film), Booksmart, and Brightburn.

Results[]

  1. Duel Of The Fates was permanently cancelled.
  2. The script was leaked weeks later and can be found online for all to see.[1] Later, a fan artist named Andrew Winegarner wrote a fan made comic adaptation, which is based on the script of the film.[2]
  3. On December 20th 2019, Disney released JJ Abrams' version of Star Wars Episode 9 titled: The Rise Of Skywalker; which got mixed reviews from audiences and fans, but had positive box office returns.
