Why It Was Cancelled[]
- The 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie was a major box office disappointment.
- There was also talk of a potential sequel for Ratchet & Clank. If it happened alongside Sly Cooper, it would have been challenging for the development crew.
- Sucker Punch Productions, the studio who created the Sly Cooper series, stated that they would not make any future Sly Cooper games. Sanzaru Games, the development studio behind Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time, also never continued work with the franchise.
- Rainmaker left the production of the film, leading to the film's cancellation.
- The project never entered pre-production, and would’ve only been greenlit had Ratchet & Clank performed well.
Results[]
- The Sly Cooper movie was completely cancelled.
- Despite the film's sudden cancellation, the trailer is still up on a handful of YouTube channels.
- On a side note, the trailer was remade, with the "Breaking into theaters 2016" graphic being replaced with one saying “The movie".
- Despite the film's sudden cancellation, the trailer is still up on a handful of YouTube channels.
- A Sly Cooper TV show was announced and set for an October 2019 release, presumably as an attempt to replace the cancelled film. However, nothing has been shown of the project as of 2025. It is possible the TV show had been cancelled as well.
- Sony decided to work on different projects, such as Death Stranding, Gravity Rush, and ironically, the live-action film adaptation of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda.
- The Sly Cooper franchise, with a cancelled film and no announcement of a future game, has remained dormant for over a decade.
