In March 2021, Adam Wingard said in an interview that back in 2013, Peter Jackson had been interested in producing a sequel or prequel to the film titled Skull Island, with Wingard as director and Simon Barrett writing it.


THe plot is currently unknown.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. The King Kong rights had been transfered to Warner Bros. by 2013.
  2. Wingard pivoted to offering a modern day sequel, but ultimately nothing came of the proposal.
  3. Kong was the last of his species in the 2005 film.
  4. Jackson's version became one of the most expensive films of the 2000's, hence why Universal didn't want to deal with that problem again.

  2. The 2005 remake of King Kong ended up being stand alone.
  3. The art book The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island ended up as a follow up to the remake.
  4. Warner Bros. rebooted the franchise with Kong: Skull Island. Which the fillm was canon to the Monsterverse.
