"Shrek 5" was the working title for a planned fifth film and prequel to the Shrek Franchise set for a 2013 release.


Plot[]

Plot details were unknown, But after the release of Shrek 2 in 2004 Jeffrey Katzenberg stated the Film would center around how Shrek came to the swamp, somewhat confirming it's intention as a prequel to the franchise.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. Reasons are unknown, but possibly because Dreamworks felt like Shrek Forever After would be a better-suited sendoff for the franchise.

Results[]

  • Shrek Forever After was made as the final film instead.
  • The Original version was cancelled
  • Puss in Boots was made as the prequel to the franchise released in 2011.
  • Shrek 5 was later put back into development in 2016 but instead as either a reboot or a follow-up to Shrek: Forever After with Michael McCullers currently penning the script. In April 2023 Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed that plans for the fifth film and a Donkey spin-off were in active development and was still in the talks with the original cast to return. The fifth film was later set for a July 1, 2026 release date.
