In the 2010s, a Bollywood drama film titled Johnny Walker (now known as Shoebite) was announced to be in the works.

Plot[]

A man called John Pereira, who is in his 60s, sets out on an unforgettable journey of self-discovery.

Development[]

The film was planned in the 2010s, and was first announced under the previous title of Johnny Walker by Percept Picture Company, based on a story Labour Of Love by M. Night Shyamalan. Shoojit Sircar was supposed to be the director and was supposed to be produced by UTV Motion Pictures, while the lyrics were confirmed to be penned by Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar.[1]

Because the film was put on a Manali schedule, the shooting unit converted the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) into a hospital. Johnny Walker was never made, so Sircar took the film to UTV Motion Pictures, renaming it Shoebite. Percept filed a lawsuit against UTV seeking to prevent Shoebite from being made; after a long legal battle the lawsuit was dismissed in 2012. Sircar made the film Vicky Donor and got it released since he started to face delays in Shoebite.[2][3]

In March 2018, Amitabh Bachchan, who was supposed to play the protagonist of the film John Pereira, requested the makers to release the film in his tweet, saying "Yes... put aside the internal debate, issues, or personal view points and give this labour of love from Shoojit Sircar a chance for others to appreciate this novel story and film... please.."[4]

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. While getting the NOC was difficult, Amitabh Bachchan refused to do the film without the issue being resolved.
  2. Ronnie Screwvala, who used to be UTV Motion Pictures head, left the studio in 2019.

Results[]

  • Shoebite was permanently cancelled.
  • UTV Motion Pictures rudely ignored Shoojit's request to revive the film, because of this, the film, nor any footage tied to it, will likely never be released.

Trivia[]

  • Other considered titles for the movie during production were Johnny Mastana and later Johnny Walker.[5]
