During the development of Saw IV there were at least three alternative versions for the fourth installment, which included plot changes.

Midnight Man[]

Plot[]

In this first draft, Saw IV would be a prequel exploring how John Kramer became the serial killer Jigsaw.

It would all start with a traumatic event that would mark John since he was a child, where a thief would break in to steal, and as a consequence the thief would kill John's parents.

It should be noted that this version was not completely ruled out, since in the final version of Saw IV the life of John Kramer was explored before he became Jigsaw. Also to say, that this draft was an early version of The Collector, a horror film written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

Saw IV (Eric Matthews version)[]

Plot[]

Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Now, after the murder of Detective Kerry is made public, two FBI agents, Agent Straum and Agent Pérez, arrive in the terrified community to help veteran Detective Hoffman thoroughly examine the gray remains of Jigsaw, and so on. solve the puzzle. However, when the missing Detective Eric Matthews is kidnapped and pushed into the game, he has just ninety minutes to succeed in a series of insane traps and save his ex-wife, Gloria, or face deadly consequences...

Deleted Traps[]

  • Collar Device: The victim would have been wearing a metal collar, resembling a cigar cutter. Also, the victim would have his mouth open by a dental device where the key to open the device would be found; if the participant failed to remove the key from the victim's uvula, the collar would activate after sixty seconds and the victim would be decapitated.
  • The Head Crusher: Head Crusher, would consist of a large chair located in room 17 of the Alexhander Motel. The victim would be strapped to the chair, with the head pulled back with a collar attached to the fixed recline of the chair. Once the participant enters the door, the trap would activate a vise that would crush the victim's head. To avoid, the participant must remove the key, located in the victim's ear, to open the lock. It is worth mentioning that this trap was not completely ruled out for the final version, since the concept of the torture chair would be used for The Scalping Seat.
  • The guillotine: This trap was an early version of the Pendulum Trap for Saw V, what changed was that the pendulum would cut off the victim's head and not the abdomen.

Why was it canceled?[]

  • Donnie Wahlberg initially did not want to reprise the role, only agreeing to return shortly before filming began.

Third Screenplay[]

Plot[]

The third draft had a similar plot to the final version, only that the victim in the Ice Block Trap would be Officer Rigg's wife, Tracy.

Results[]

  • The original version of Saw IV was canceled for good, and then rewritten by replacing Eric Matthews with Officer Daniel Rigg and changing almost the rest of the plot.
  • Saw IV was released in 2007, receiving mixed reviews from critics.
