In 2018, Scarlett Johansson was cast to play Dante "Tex" Gill in the biographical drama film titled Rub & Tug. The film was to be directed by Rupert Sanders and to be produced by Johansson herself, Joel Silver and Tobey Maguire, in which Sanders previously directed the 2017 film Ghost in the Shell, which also starred Johansson.
The film was supposed to be based on the true story of Dante "Tex" Gill, a crime kingpin who used his massage parlor as a front for prostitution in the ’70s and ’80s.
Why It Was Cancelled
- Scarlett Johansson dropped out of the project in July 2018 due to receiving backlash for being cast in the role of Dante "Tex" Gill because Gill was a transgender male, and many people (including Johansson herself) felt that an actual transgender actor should play the role of Gill.
- The Scarlett Johansson version was permanently cancelled.
- The current version will instead be a television series, with Pose and Transparent producer Our Lady J signed to write the series' pilot, and the series will star a transgender actor for the role of Dante "Tex" Gill. It is unknown however if the series will still be titled Rub & Tug.
