Maya The First Great Story

Maya: The First Great Story (in spanish as Maya: La Primera Gran Historia) was an animated film by the studio Animex Producciones. The film began production in 2003, under the direction of Ricardo Arnaiz and with actor Bruno Bichir and singer Emmanuel as producers. It expected to be released during 2005.

Plot[]

As the name suggests, the film is set during the golden age of Mayan culture. Ah Kin, a young boy, is chosen by the moon goddess Ix Chel to restore order to the world.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  • During 2005, the suspension of production was announced due to creative differences between the director and the producers.
    • In Bichir's words, Arnaiz demanded that the project be finished quickly, not recognising the work he had done as an animator and asking him to leave the project.
    • For his part, singer Emmanuel stated that it was due to a problem with the script.

Results[]

  • It was going to be the first film production of Animex. However due to its cancellation, the first film of the studio ended up being The Legend of Nahuala.
  • Animex would later make another film focusing on the ancient Mesoamerican civilisations. In this case, the Olmec culture would be seen in their second feature film, Nikté.
  • The teaser trailers and the official trailer can be found on Youtube.
  • In 2005, the only Mexican animated film to be released was Imaginum by Ánima Estudios.
  • At the end of 2016, director Ricardo Arnaiz had uploaded an image of the film to his social networks announcing that it would finally be released in 2020.
    • However, it was not released, possibly because of the Covid-19 pandemic, or because in the end, it was impossible to resume production.
