Kingdom of the sun teaser poster

Kingdom of the Sun is the original version of The Emperor's New Groove, it was supposed to be directed by Roger Allers. It was originally scheduled to be released in December 2000 before The Emperor’s New Groove took the release date.

Voice Cast[]

  • Owen Wilson as Pacha
  • David Spade as Manco
  • Eartha Kitt as Yzma
  • Harvey Fierstein as Huaca
  • Laura Prepon as Nina
  • Carla Gugino as Mata

Roger Allers was planned as the film's director and Randy Fullmer as a producer. Then supervising animator Andreas Deja join the production, who was in charge of the witch character of Yzma, and pop musician Sting, who, in the wake of Elton John's success with The Lion King's soundtrack, had been assigned to write several songs for the film.

Prince Manco switches places with a llama herder named Pacha. A witch named Yzma figured it out and turned Manco into a llama. She later decides to blot the sun into darkness with the darkness god Supai.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. Test audiences didn’t like the Prince & The Pauper storyline and how dark most of the story was.
  2. Some felt Sting's songs were too experimental.
  3. Roger Allers stepped down from director since he didn't have enough time to complete his film with a set date for December 2000 as a way of merchandise deals. Had he been given enough time, it would have been released sometime in 2003.
  4. Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame weren't financially successful.
  5. The film’s titles went through a rough production table. First, the film was going to be titled “The Kingdom’s Sun” then “Kingdom In The Sun”, than finally, the final most popular cancelled attempt “Kingdom Of The Sun”.

  • Roger Allers would later co-direct Open Season in 2006.
  • Mark Dindal became the new director and made The Emperor's New Groove, released in December 2000.
  • The tone changed from a typical Disney musical with sprinkles of Incan culture to a slapstick comedy akin of Looney Tunes.
  • Owen Wilson was replaced by John Goodman to voice Pacha as his character is older in the final film.
  • Yzma isn't a darkness-seeking witch and just a mad scientist.
  • Sting's old songs are scrapped with new ones made for the retool.
  • Manco was renamed Kuzco because the earlier means "vagina" in Japanese, “lame” in Spanish, and "bad movie" in Turkish.
  • The version is showcased in the 2002 documentary "The Sweatbox".
  • It was estimated to be approximately 25% fully animated.
  • One of the characters, called Snowball, which was going to be Pacha’s white pet llama, was unused during the final film, despite having some story boards released.
  • Harvey Fierstein, Laura Prepon and Carl Gugino's characters and lines were scrapped.
