A Gremlin.
In the early 1980s, it was originally intended for Tim Burton (Frankenweenie, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride) to direct the film Gremlins (released in 1984) for Warner Bros and Amblin Entertainment.[1]
Plot[]
The plot is the exact same as the classic film that was released.
Development[]
Even though the development of this version didn't go as far, according to the site Mental Floss, in a 2019 article of theirs, Tim Burton was at helm to direct at first since his 1984 short film Frankenweenie caught producer Steven Spielberg's attention.[2]
Why This Version Was Cancelled[]
- Steven Spielberg passed Tim Burton over, it was due to concerns about him not having directed a feature film at that point.
- Burton was also relatively unknown at the time.
Results[]
- Gremlins went on without Tim Burton, with Joe Dante taking his place as the director.
- The Tim Burton version was permanently cancelled.
- Pee Wee's Big Adventure instead ended up being Burton's directional debut in 1985.
