Flanimals was a planned Illumination Entertainment film based on the children's book by author Ricky Gervais (The Office) that was first announced in 2009. It was supposed to be Illumination Entertainment's first feature-length film.


Fifty species of creatures are so ugly and misshapen they become cute and endearing. One of these creatures, a pudgy, perspiring purple creature, goes on a mission to change the world.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. The cancellation reasons are unknown. but probably due to the characters are too creepy for young children.


  • Flanimals remained as a book.
  • The Flanimals movie is shelved and will probably be so for decades.
  • In 2010, Despicable Me was placed as Illumination Entertainment's first movie.


  • This film, had it been released, was going to have a short called "Brad and Gary", a storyboard(s) for the short can be found on the SlideShare website of story artist and director Didier Ah Koon.[1]
