Genndy Tartakovsky's POPEYE Animation Test

Popeye was a proposed film that was going to be made by Sony Pictures Animation based on the famous cartoon character Popeye created by E. C. Segar. The film was to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory and the writer of The Powerpuff Girls). Its production began in 2010, and it would be released at some point in 2016.

Plot[]

The plot would be about Popeye trying to find his father.

Cast[]

  • Tom Kenny as Popeye
  • Grey DeLisle as Olive Oyl

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. Genndy Tartakovsky thought that the Popeye movie wouldn't work.
  2. “Creative differences” affected production.
  3. The 2014 Sony Hack contributed to the cancellation.
  4. Amy Pascal didn't like Popeye's design and tell Gennedy to modernize the design for the character.

Results[]

  • As of April 2024, the 3-D CGI-animated Popeye film has been moved to Warner Bros. Pictures. Now, both Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and King Features Syndicate will be developing the film with the new director, Craig McCracken (creator of "The Powerpuff Girls" and "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends"). Also, Scott Willis will be returning to the project.
