Logo for the film.
In 2016, a film called Express Yourself was first announced at Sony, the film that eventually became The Emoji Movie, and was nearly done with production at the time.[1]
Plot[]
The plot is the exact same like the 2017 film.
Development[]
The concept was first thought of in July 2015, but was announced in 2016 officially. Anthony Leondis was set to be the director. Assumingely there were multiple different voice actors that didn't end up in the final product considered for the roles. Nothing much more is known about its development aside from these minuscule details.
Why This Version Was Cancelled[]
- Jordan Peele was asked to voice Poop; he refused, and he has cited this offer as the reason he decided to start a directorial career, starting with Get Out. The role was instead later given to Patrick Stewart.
- Ilana Glazer was originally cast for the role of Jailbreak, but for unknown reasons, she was replaced by Anna Faris.
- The director and the writers were not impressed with the first title and the original draft.
Results[]
- The Emoji Movie was finally released in theaters on July 28, 2017 and it was panned by critics and audiences due to the script, characters, humor, and product placement.
- The original version of The Emoji Movie was permanently cancelled.
