Detective Pikachu 2 is a cancelled sequel to the 2019 film, Detective Pikachu. It was announced a head of the first flim. The sequel was supposed to be released sometime in 2021.



Plot[]

The plot would take events of the first film Detective Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) and Tim Goodman (acted by Justice Smith) tackling another mystery in their world. Rest of the plot is unknown.



Production[]

In 2021, Detective Pikachu star Justice Smith revealed that a sequel probably won’t be happening. The movie screen take on the Pokémon franchise was well-received by most fans, and it also performed fairly well at the box office, and they had plans to make a sequel.


Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. During an interview with HBO Max, Justice Smith says he would love to do a sequel, but it probably won’t happen because of some disagreements.
  2. The directors couldn’t think of enough ideas for a sequel, especially since the 2018 spinoff Pokémon game of the same name doesn't even have a sequel at the time.


Result[]

  1. Detective Pikachu currently remains as a stand-alone film.
  2. Detective Pikachu is instead getting a spin-off Netflix series coming sometime in the future.
  3. The game it was based of recieved a sequel on the Nintendo Switch in 2023 called Detective Pikachu Returns.
  4. The sequel is scrapped and will probably be so for many more years to come, however, following the release of the game's sequel, the project may be revived in the near future under the name Pokemon: Detective Pikachu Returns.
