Cancelled Movies. Wiki

Note: This is not be confused with a similar adaptation on the book at the page Cats (Amblimation) as both are completely different films that were cancelled but which tackle the same subject.

Sometime in the late 1960s, Disney had offered to do an animated adaptation based on the 1939 book by T.S Eliot, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

The plot would presumably be the same as the book.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. T. S. Eliot did not want his work to be turned into "cutesy cartoon cats", therefore turned the version Disney wanted to do down.

  • The Disney version of Cats was permanently cancelled.
  • Disney went on to make The Aristocats instead, and released it in 1970.
  • Many years later, Universal Pictures made a live-action film based on Cats in 2019. However, the film received nearly universally negative reception from critics and audiences alike, as well as being a box-office failure.

  • According to Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the first things Eliot's widow, Valerie, told him when he met her to get the rights to make the musical was "You, realize, don't you, that Tom turned down Disney?"[1]
