Bone.
In March 2008, it was announced that Warner Animation Group was adapting Jeff Smith's comic series Bone into an animated film as they had just bought the rights to it.[1]
Plot[]
The plot is unknown, but it can be assumed that it would've been the exact same as the comic strips.
Development[]
Warner Bros bought the rights to the Bone comic strips back in 2008 to make a feature-length film out of it. It was to be distributed by Warner Bros Pictures and also their Animation Group counterpart. Dan Lin was set to produce, and Smith himself was attached as an executive producer. Dan Lin's studio Lin Pictures was also involved with the film, alongside Animal Logic. In 2011, it was mentioned that the film would have been turned into a CGI trilogy.[2]
A four-minute animation demo reel was shown to Smith in summer 2011, who described it as:
"Fone Bone was falling in the water and going through cliffs and canyons. The dragon moved in from off-camera in the shadows with smoke around him, all in 3-D. It was pretty mind-blowing."
Later on in January 2012, Greek creator Patrick Sean Smith was brought on to write from working on a previous draft by Monjo, and P.J. Hogan signed on as the director with a projected release date in either 2013 or 2014. No updates on the for the film came for nearly five years. In November 2016, Mark Osborne and Adam Kline, were revealed to direct and write the film trilogy, replacing Smith and Hogan. Nothing more significant has come out since then.
Why It Was Cancelled[]
- The overall film had multiple issues during development. Smith himself revealed on April 2022 that the production was disastrous and never got beyond the pre-production stage; "A very unfun experience. They kept telling me not to get involved because they had bought the rights to it and could do whatever they want with it. All the scripts were awful".[3]
Results[]
- On October 2019, it was announced the project had been sold to Netflix to become a television series. However plans for the show have also been canceled due to problems going on at Netflix.
- Bone remains as a comic strip series.
- The Warner Bros. Bone film was permanently cancelled.
Trivia[]
- It was implied the adaptation was briefly considered to be moved to 20th Century Fox, but any plans fell through once Disney's acquisition of the company was fulfilled in 2019.
