In 2006, Lionsgate was going to make a Black Widow film based on the Marvel character of the same name. The film was going to have an R rating and the script was going to be written by David Hayter, who had previously wrote X-Men and X2.

- Due to solo female action films Bloodrayne, Ultraviolet, and AEON Flux being massive flops, Lionsgate started to become disinterested in the project.
- The rights to Black Widow reverted back to Marvel.
