In 2018 and D23 2019 after the success of the highly successful Marvel film Black Panther, it was announced that Black Panther would be getting a sequel. Production was about to start in 2020, but was delayed to March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then was delayed again to July 2021 following the loss of Chadwick Boseman and his death also ended up causing the film's release date to be switched from May 6, 2022, July 8, 2022, then officially release on November 11th, 2022 following his death the original title was going to be Black Panther: Rise of the 5 Frogs.

Why It Was Cancelled[]
- The COVID-19 pandemic affected the film's production.
- Chadwick Boseman died on August 28, 2020 after a four year battle with colorectal cancer. On December 10th, 2020, during Disney Investor Day, Disney, Marvel and Kevin Feige announced they won't recast his role in the franchise with the sequel now be a spin-off sequel focusing on the world and supporting characters that were introduced in the first movie.
- Chadwick's death caused the film to switch release date from May 6, 2022, July 8th, 2022, before it's final release date on November 11th, 2022, delaying filming from March 2021 to July 2021 and even causing Letitia Wright's character Shuri to be given a larger role in the sequel due to his death.

- The Black Panther franchise has been left in jeopardy after losing Chadwick (outside of voice acting in his animated and gaming appearances) and his last role as Black Panther will be on the Disney+/Marvel animated show What If...? as confirmed by Kevin Feige.
- On February 1, 2021, Disney announced a Disney+/Marvel spin off series World of Wakanda focusing on the world of Wakanda with its supporting characters rather than T'Challa with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler developing the spin off series.
- The film was released in 2022 as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. T'Challa dies off-screen at the start of the movie and appears in flashbacks after that. Thus, as promised, Shuri was given the role of the main protagonist and takes up the mantle of the Black Panther at the end of the movie.
