In May 2008, Take-Two Interactive announced a deal with Universal Pictures to partner for a BioShock movie.


The plot would have followed the story from the games.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  1. The budget was too expensive for Universal Pictures to handle.
  2. Gore Verbinski tried to push the film to an R rating, but Universal Pictures wanted the film to be rated PG-13.
  3. Ken Levine and 2K Games did not feel that the new director was a good choice to direct.


  • The Universal Pictures version was permanently cancelled.
  • In 2022, Netflix announced a new film adaptation of BioShock with Vertigo Entertainment and 2K producing. Francis Lawrence is set to direct and produce and Michael Green will write the screenplay.
