Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is an early version of the 2026 action superhero film Avengers: Doomsday.
Development[]
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, Marvel Studios announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, followed shortly after with the confirmation of Destin Daniel Cretton as director. In September, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) writer Jeff Loveness was revealed to be writing the screenplay. Cretton exited the film in November 2023, when Michael Waldron was hired to replace Loveness as writer, after previously serving as head writer for the first season of Loki (2021) and the writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Jonathan Majors was attached to reprise his role as Kang the Conqueror in The Kang Dynasty before he was fired in December 2023, by which time Marvel was referring to the film internally as Avengers 5. Filming is set to take place in the United Kingdom, and was originally expected to begin in early 2024, prior to its delays and Majors's firing, On May 5, 2024 it was announced that Shawn Levy is in talks to direct Avengers 5. On July 27, 2024 in Comic Con it was announced that the Russo Brothers will be directing Avengers 5 with a new title and villain in Doctor Doom and played by Robert Downey Jr. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026.
Why it Was Cancelled[]
- Kang's actor Johnathan Majors got fired from MCU after he was found guilty of harassment and reckless assault in the third degree on March 25, 2023.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a box office disappointment and received tons of negative reviews from both critics and audiences, which made less people trust its director and writer, Destin Daniel Cretton and Jeff Loveness with handling an Avengers film.
- Many audiences felt that Kang wasn't as threatening of a villain compared to Thanos, due to being killed off in the film he was introduced in despite the end credits scene showing the Council of Kangs.
- The film's script reportly got leaked and also received backlash from fans due to its poor use of the multiverse.
- Robert Downey Jr. was brought back to play Doctor Doom, who would replace Kang in the next Avengers film.
Results[]
- The film was reworked to Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to be released in December 18, 2026, and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to release on December 17, 2027.
- The original version was permanently cancelled.
