Akira is a popular japanese battle punk type manga series made by Katsuhiro Otomo. A life action akira film was in the works since 2000 and was confirmed to be in the works by Katsuhiro and at Warner Brothers in 2002. It were to be directed by Marvel director Taika Waititi, with James Gunn attached to write the film. The life action Akira film was originally scheduled to be released in May 21, 2021.

Why It Was Cancelled

  1. There were concerns of fearing the fact over whitewashing through the film's cast.
  2. The team has trouble trying to set the film outside of Japan due to the story's ties with Japanese history.
  3. The COVID-19 impact affected the film's further overlooking development continuation.
  4. It got pushed back by some other studios too.
  5. The film was delayed too many times.
  6. It was somewhat likely scrapped in favor of Godzilla Vs, Kong.

Results

  • The film was permanently cancelled.
  • Taika Waititi went to direct Thor: Love And Thunder and The Suicide Squad instead.
  • During an interview with Wired, Waititi said that he was not going to give up on making the film happen, however, no updates have emerged to proving he's actually continuing the project.
  • The movie fell apart, and was put in a indefinite hold. With not much hope to actually see this film ever release.
